Old Testament Offerings - Burnt Offering (Daily Devotional)

Greetings and thank you so much for joining us today to take a few minutes in the word and prayer. This week, we are looking at the Old Testament offerings and what they mean to us as New Testament believers. In the Old Testament, God instituted different kinds of offerings that the people had to bring to Him which the high priest then helped in offering them up to God. One of them was the burnt offering, these were offerings of animals or grain which they brought and in the outer court, on the bronze altar of sacrifice, these were burnt completely, entirely and offered as a burnt offering to the Lord. These speak to us first and foremost of Christ who offered Himself up completely, unreservedly, fully unto the Father, as that one and compete sacrifice unto God. Ephesians chapter 5, verse 2 points this out to us that ‘Christ offered Himself as that one sacrifice.’ It also speaks to us about us offering our bodies as a living sacrifice which Romans chapter 12, verses 1 and 2 speak to us about. That means our bodies are offered completely, unreservedly and yet it is a living sacrifice meaning we are continuing to live in this body and yet it is completely offered unto God like the burnt offering. So, as New Testament believers, while we may not bring those animals and other kinds of things to offer up as a burnt offering unto God, our lives are like that- completely offered up unto God on the altar of sacrifice. We present ourselves, our bodies as a living sacrifice which Paul says is a holy, acceptable and reasonable act of worship to God. Let’s pray, Father, we thank you that we can offer up ourselves- our bodies as a living sacrifice. May we be like those burnt offerings- completely and wholly surrendered to you, for you, for your glory, we thank you, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
