Hello everyone, such a joy to come together and study God’s word. We are talking about power in scripture and when we talk about power, our minds automatically go to the book of Acts and the words/ promise of Jesus and then the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the early believers. Let’s quickly look at some scriptures and then we will talk more about this power which Jesus promised us. Acts chapter 1, verses 4 and 5, ‘And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”’ Jesus wanted the believers to wait for a promise of the Father. This promise of the Father is also mentioned in the gospel of Luke chapter 24, where Luke records the same statements and he says, Jesus told them to wait for something very important before they went ahead doing the ministry that He called them to do. He had already commanded them to go to the ends of the earth and preach the good news but before that He wanted them to receive power from on high and this was the promised baptism in the Holy Spirit. It is termed as the promise of the Father because we see this even under the old covenant in the Old Testament, Joel prophesied and said that God will pour out His Spirit on all flesh. John the Baptist had also spoken of the baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire which the Lord Jesus would give to His believers. Jesus reiterated this and asked the believers to wait for this empowering from on high before they went and did any ministry they were assigned. Acts chapter 1 and verse 8, He tells them, ‘But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”’ I want to encourage us friends, we have this promise of power from on high, power from God to live our Christian lives victoriously. We see here that Jesus told them that this power will enable His disciples to be witnesses. We can be witnesses of any kind but He wants all His disciples to be witnesses with power. We see later on in Acts chapter 2, the baptism in the Holy Spirit takes place and from then on, there is no more tarrying or waiting for the baptism in the Holy Spirit, but the apostles and the disciples go ahead and minister baptism in the Holy Spirit to everyone who accepts the Lord Jesus Christ. We see the kind of ministry that is accomplished through the believers. There are statements like these men who turned the cities upside down, were moving into newer cities. So, there was an impact being made by the disciples of Jesus who were baptized in the Holy Spirit. Baptism in the Holy Spirit gave power to the early believers. We see that they walked with boldness, gifts of the Holy Spirit, they walked with demonstrations of the kingdom of God in signs, wonders, miracles, and healings. The baptism in the Holy Spirit caused them to walk in power. We too can walk in the power of God as witnesses and God wants us to be witnesses with power. Shall we pray together? Heavenly Father, we thank you that you are an empowering God. You want us to do your works, in your way, with your power. I pray that everyone listening will be empowered by the baptism in the Holy Spirit so that the works and the power of the Spirit maybe seen through their lives, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
