He is the same Holy Spirit, who anoints people in different ways, for different purposes and in different measures.

The Lord Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit and did all He did - preaching, teaching, healing, delivering - by the anointing of the Spirit.

By "anointing" we mean the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit at work in and through a person.

Luke 4:18
Acts 10:38
Matthew 12:28
Hebrews 2:3,4

Today we desire to explore a little more about the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

The same Holy Spirit, anoints and empowers people in different ways and with different degrees of power.

Overview/Some examples:
Moses was anointed to be a leader, deliverer, miracle-worker, prophet, administrator. He led a large nation of people. (Numbers 11:25, Deuteronomy 34:10-12)

Joshua was also anointed to be a leader. He received of the anointing that was on Moses and operated in the same kind of leadership-wisdom as Moses did. He however did not manifest as many miracles like Moses.

Deuteronomy 34:9
Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Judges - Judges were leaders who helped govern Israel for a period of time. We see time and again the statement "The Spirit of the Lord came upon....." (Judges 3:10, 6:34, 9:23, 11:29, 13:25, 14:6,19 15:14,19). Among these Samson stands out, because not only did he govern Israel, but he was empowered to be a strong warrior.

Samuel, Elijah, Elisha were prophets who were anointed by the Spirit. Yet even among them we see different kinds of anointings manifest. Samuel was a prophet who was greatly respected in all Israel. Elijah was anointed to confront false prophets and witchcraft. Elisha did twice as many miracles as Elijah.

David was anointed in many areas, as a psalmist, warrior, prophet, and King.

Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and other major and minor prophets were anointed by the Holy Spirit and each had distinct experiences of hearing from God, visions, dreams and angelic encounters.

Hence we understand that He is the same Holy Spirit, who anoints people in different ways, for different purposes and in different measures.

Important: There is an anointing for whatever God has called you to do.

Whether we are doing the work of the ministry or are engaging in the marketplace - there is an anointing for every God-given assignment.

Different kinds of anointing for those in ministry: Apostle, Prophet, Pastor, Teacher, Evangelist, Worship, Prayer, and many more.

Even among these people can be anointed in different ways.

For example, there are different kinds of apostolic anointings : apostles who plant churches, apostles who govern, apostles who birth movements, apostles in the marketplace, apostles who open new territories, etc. For example, Peter was an apostle to the Jews, while Paul was an apostle to the Gentiles.

Among pastors, there can be different kinds of pastoral anointings : pastors who are great teachers, pastors who work with children, pastors who work with young people, pastors who are apostolic/prophetic in nature, pastors who engage the marketplace, etc.

Similarly, there are different kinds of anointings for those in the marketplace : in business, in creative arts, in creative design, in government, in education, and many more. Joseph, David, Daniel, and others were anointed by God to impact the marketplace.

So as believers we must learn to lean on and draw upon the anointing - the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit - on our lives in whatever we are engaged in.

This happens as we learn to commune/fellowship with the Holy Spirit and consciously ask and yield to His empowering in our lives.

The result (fruit) of the anointing

A, It is the anointing that births the supernatural
All of us have natural abilities and talents, acquired skills with which we are able to accomplish things.
But we must remember, that it is the anointing that empowers us to go beyond ourselves and release the supernatural work of God.

Joseph was able to interpret dreams.
Moses was highly educated, but it was by the Spirit that he was able to perform miracles that shook Egypt.
David never studied architecture, but by the Spirit, he designed the Temple in detail.
Elijah could run only so fast, but when the Spirit came upon him, he outran horses.

B, It is the anointing that cause lasting works to be done through us.

Works of the flesh profit nothing.

They may cause some excitement, impress people, but do not have the power to bring permanent change.

John 6:63 "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life."

C, It is the anointing that breaks demonic yokes and removes demonic burdens

Isaiah 10:27
It shall come to pass in that day That his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, And his yoke from your neck, And the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.

Isaiah 59:19
So shall they fear The name of the LORD from the west, And His glory from the rising of the sun; When the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the LORD will lift up a standard against him.

We need to depend on the anointing of the Holy Spirit to overthrow demonic works.

The Anointing can be increased

There are varying levels of the anointing.
The Seventy leaders received a portion of the anointing that was on Moses.
Elisha had a double portion of Elijah's anointing.

We need to be repeatedly anointed afresh.
Psalm 92:10 But my horn You have exalted like a wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil.

Although the believers we baptized in the Holy Spirit, we read over and over again in the Book of Acts, that they were "filled" with the Spirit, again and again. This indicates to us, "fresh anointing" of the Spirit coming on them.

We must desire for more.
By increasing in prayer, consecration, time in the word, associating with the right people, faith we can increase the anointing on our lives.

The Anointing can be released, imparted or transferred

A portion of the anointing on Moses was imparted to Joshua through the laying on of hands.
A portion of the anointing on Moses was transferred to the Seventy elders. In this case, God had them assemble together in the Tabernacle and Himself transferred the anointing.
Elisha received a double portion of the anointing on Elijah, primarily through faithful association and obedience.

The anointing can be released or imparted or transferred through the laying on of hands, touch of faith, association (working together with someone), or supernaturally transferred as God chooses.

What you respect (honor), you will attract. It is important to respect a servant of God, if you want to receive from what is on his life.

The anointing can also be transferred into material objects, e.g. oil, handkerchiefs, etc.
Paul's handkerchief's (Acts 19:11)

The Anointing is tangible at times

There are times (not necessarily always) that we can recognize the anointing.
The anointing can be recognized by our spiritual senses.
The anointing can at times also be recognized by our natural senses.

The anointing of the Holy Spirit is felt in different ways, e.g. like a mantle (a blanket coming on someone), fire (heat), wind (stirring, moving), joy, weighty glory (heavy presence), hand (someone touching you), rain (feeling of refreshing), etc.

The Corporate Anointing

While the anointing we carry as individual believers is important, the corporate anointing is very important and when truly present, is stronger than what rests on an individual.

2 Chronicles 5:11-14 When people worshipped, the glory cloud of His presence filled the Temple and people could not stand to minister.

The Early Church walked in this corporate anointing.

The keys we find is that they were (A)in one accord - united in their hearts, shared things, fellowshipped with one another (B)Continued in prayer and worship

Unity, being of one accord, one heart and one mind, demonstrated through love, sharing, caring, and genuine Christian fellowship is so important. When we are in this state, and then come to pray and worship God together, we are going to experience levels and degrees of corporate anointing, that we have never tasted before. Powerful things can happen!

Psalm 133:1-3
1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity!
2 It is like the precious oil upon the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aaron, Running down on the edge of his garments.
3 It is like the dew of Hermon, Descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the LORD commanded the blessing— Life forevermore.

Let's be a people who will press in for more of His anointing, both individually and collectively.
