John 10:10
The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

John 10:10 (Message Bible)
A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.

The Lord Jesus came to give us "life". He is referring to "the God-Kind of life". And He came to give this to us "abundantly" - in a limitless, overflowing, never-ending measure. You can have as much of this "God-kind of life" as you desire.

This God-kind of life it the "more and better life than you ever dreamed of". This is it!

We've often heard the slogan "live life king size" in motivational and other promotional material. However, here we are talking about living the abundant life, the God-kind of life.

Why do we need this life?
We go back to the Garden of Eden, where man was created in God's image. When God breathed into man, God imparted of Himself into man. Man (Adam and Eve) had the life and nature of God in them. However, when Adam and Eve sinned, they died - spiritually first. Death is the absence of life. They lost this God-kind of life. Instead of having the God-kind of life in them, then now had spiritual death at work in them.

Romans 5:12
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—

Sin and death is at work within every human person.

Ephesians 2:1-2
1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,
2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience.

We are dead in sin, and hence we are living our lives according to the worldly and demonic influences around us.

Ephesians 4:17-19
17 This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind,
18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;
19 who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

When we are alienated from the life of God, we end up living lives that are yielded to all kinds of wrong things.

The wrong we do (sin) promises pleasure, but only produces pain.

When we do wrong (sin), the pleasure is short, but the pain it produces, lasts long.

Sin (the wrong we do) affects us, affects others and most importantly affects our relationship with God.

We are separated from God because of sin. We are therefore spiritually dead.

Isaiah 59:1,2
1 Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear.
2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.

Our sins separate us from God.

Jeremiah 5:25 Your iniquities have turned these things away, And your sins have withheld good from you.

Our sins rob us of the blessings of God.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death,....

Ultimately, our sins are taking us to a place of eternal separation from God, in hell.

But the Good News of the Bible is that God loves us so much that He stepped into our world. God came to us to set us free from sin, satan and death. This is why Jesus Christ came. The Lord Jesus Christ is God who stepped into our world to rescue us from sin, satan and death. The Lord Jesus Christ came to give us this God-kind of life.

The Lord Jesus Christ died on the Cross for all our wrong doing (sin). He bore the consequences of our sin on Himself. He died, was buried and rose up again. He showed Himself alive to His disciples and commissioned them to go everywhere and tell the Good News that, there is forgiveness of sins, freedom from sin and satan and eternal life, the God-kind of life available to every one.

What happens when we receive this abundant life?

Spiritual implications

John 1:4-5
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

His life dispels darkness out of our lives. Darkness represents anything that is of the world and that is of satan. We are set free from the dominion of darkness.

2 Peter 1:3,4
3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,
4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

We become partakers of divine nature, are empowered to live holy lives, and be free from the moral decay (corruption) that is in this world.

John 5:24 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

We have eternal life - we will not come into death, but have passed from death to life.

Practical implications

2 Corinthians 5:17,18
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
18 Now all things are of God,...

We become new creation. This is the power that brings about change.

The abundant life that the Lord Jesus came to give is not just another new "philosophy of life" or a new paradigm in our thinking. It is not something that brings outward improvements.

Rather, this life brings transformation inside out. This life is the power that brings change first on the inner person and on then to every area of life. This God-kind of life transforms us.

How do we receive this abundant life?

John 1:12
believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and through faith in Him receive this new life.
