Be Patient (Daily Devotional)

Welcome to Living Supernaturally and to this time of daily devotion in God’s word, where we study God’s word and we see how we can apply the word daily because experiencing the power of God’s word is in the application/ walking out of Gods word. Today, we are looking at some of these basic instructions that Paul gives the believers in Rome and he says this in Roman chapter 12 and verse 12, ‘rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer.’ We are looking at the second part- being patient in tribulation. This quality of being patient is something which the bible declares in Galatians chapter 5, verse 22 that it is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, that it is something that matures because of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Galatians chapter 5, verse 22-23, ‘But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.’ We see that word long suffering which is another word for patience. This work of the Holy Spirit, this fruit of the Holy Spirit results in patience or long suffering and that is required for us when we go through tribulation or seasons/ days of tribulation. James chapter 1, verse 2 says something very challenging, ‘My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials.’ He is saying reckon it joyful when you fall into trials. Of course, these trials are because of the stand that we take to follow Christ or because of our lifestyle in following Jesus. He is saying, this trial is not because of our foolishness or something that we do but it is because of our life in Christ, because we want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus. So, he is saying, count it all joy when you fall into various trials; James chapter 1, verse 3 says, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.’ We saw that Paul is exhorting the believer to be patient in tribulation. The testing of this faith when we count it all joy produces patience. In verse 4 we read this, ‘let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.’ The thing that goes on in our minds, it is easy for you to say that, you don’t know the situation I am in or it is easy for someone to say that. But James when he is writing to the believers, is writing at a time when there was much persecution for the sake of the faith and for the sake of following Jesus, people stood to lose everything that they might have- their material possessions, their homes, relationships, positions and they stood to even lose their own lives. So, they knew what they were talking about when they said, count it all joy because the testing of your faith produces patience and let patience have its perfect work that you might be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. Today, if you are facing some kind of tribulation/ challenge, be patient. Count it all joy and let patience have its perfect work and this is not something that we do in our own strength but by the work of the Holy Spirit in us. Shall we pray? Father God, we pray for all those who are going through tough times/ tribulation/ trials because of their faith in Christ. We pray that you would fill them with your joy in believing. Even as they count it all joy to suffer for the sake of Christ, I pray that the testing of their faith will produce patience and that there will be much maturing and Christlikeness coming out of it. We commit all of them into your mighty hands and we pray for your grace to strengthen and lead, in Jesus’s matchless name we pray, Amen.
