We are called to go beyond the promises of the Old Covenant to walk in the provisions and blessings of the New Covenant. To live as Kings and Priests setting a kingdom culture in our communities.
The Old covenant was given through Moses, the new is given through Christ. The Old was based on the Law, the ten commandments and numerous instructions, the New covenant is based on grace given to us because of the finished work of Christ on the Cross. The Old brought guilt, the new brings righteousness. The Old was the letter of the Law, the new has the law written in our hearts.
The new covenant is a better covenant with better promises. It is a more glorious covenant moved by the work of the Spirit. It is a covenant of grace where He says, 'I am not asking you to do things, I am inviting you to receive by faith. Not based on Law or on works. Sealed with My own blood. It is my blood that is sprinkled before God and on you. There will be no more need of sacrifices and rituals.
We look at the Old Covenant and how it affected the daily life of people. How did being in covenant with God affect their everyday life? These insights help us to understand how God would seek to work with and amongst us as people of the New Covenant.
The most powerful kind of covenant is the blood covenant. The blood covenant ceremony was to announce the terms; or words of the covenant, and then to ratify/seal the covenant.
It is ratified (comes into effect) and is sealed with blood - meaning life for life. This covenant is backed up by your life and any violation of this covenant will cost life. The one making a blood covenant does so at the expense of life.
Through time God revealed Himself with many Covenant names, each revealing a little more of who He is and what He would be to His people or what He would bestow on His people, what His people can expect because they are in a covenant relationship with such a One.
There are several covenants in the Bible that God made with people:
Covenant With Noah
Covenant With Abraham
Covenant With Moses and Israel
Covenant With David
Covenant With The New
Creation (The One New Man)
Covenant is a relationship based on a solemn promise. Hence we'd like to refer to our relationship with God as a covenant-relationship. A covenant is established. However a relationship is developed within the covenant. The goal of this relationship is fellowship or intimacy.
